The Hamilton Beach 2-in-1 Toaster Oven combines a traditional toaster and countertop oven in one compact appliance. It’s a convenient option when you want oven-style results without heating the full-size oven.

For this sandwich, the countertop oven delivers an evenly golden exterior while gently melting the thick Gouda slices. The glass door also makes it easy to monitor the sandwich as it cooks.

Recipe Overview

  • Meal: Lunch or light dinner
  • Preparation time: 5 minutes
  • Cooking time: Varies by appliance setting
  • Yield: 1 sandwich

Ingredients

  • 2 slices thick-cut artisan sourdough bread
  • 1½ tablespoons salted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons premium fig jam
  • 3–4 thick slices sharp Gouda cheese

Instructions

1. Butter the bread

Spread the softened butter evenly over one side of each slice of sourdough. Be sure to cover the bread from edge to edge for an evenly crisp, golden finish.

2. Add the fig jam

Turn the bread over so the buttered sides face down. Spread a generous layer of fig jam over the unbuttered side of each slice.

3. Assemble the sandwich

Arrange the Gouda on one slice of bread. Place the second slice on top with the fig jam facing inward and the buttered side facing out.

4. Toast until golden

Place the sandwich on the rack of the Hamilton Beach 2-in-1 Toaster Oven. Select your preferred toast or bake setting and cook while monitoring it through the glass door.

The sandwich is ready when the Gouda is melted and bubbling and the sourdough is crisp and deeply golden. Appliance settings and cooking times may vary, so watch it closely near the end.

5. Slice and serve

Carefully remove the hot sandwich and allow it to rest briefly. Slice it diagonally and serve warm.

Tips for the Best Grilled Cheese

  • Use softened butter so it spreads without tearing the bread.
  • Choose thick sourdough that can support the cheese and jam.
  • Distribute the Gouda evenly to help it melt consistently.
  • Watch the sandwich closely because thick bread can brown quickly.
  • Let it rest for a minute before slicing to keep the melted filling inside.

Serving Suggestions

Pair this grilled cheese with tomato soup, a lightly dressed green salad, sliced apples, or a warm mug of cider. For extra texture, add chopped walnuts or thin apple slices inside the sandwich.

Sweet, savory, crisp, and melty, this easy sandwich delivers elevated comfort food without heating the entire kitchen or leaving behind a pile of dishes.
