Pizza Dough!

If you are looking for a great dough that is easy to work with and tastes amazing, you have found it!

It makes a lovely pie and creates the perfect crust. Let’s be honest now, that is what a good dough is all about anyway! I created this recipe about 10 years ago when I was a very busy mama, and I wanted an easy but homemade dough that I could have ready in a couple hours. I also really loved the idea of being able to make a large batch so I could make breadsticks alongside the dough or pop one in the freezer for a later use.

I am a huge fan of yeasty flavorful dough and this one does not disappoint. We will let the starter sit for 10 minutes, then add the flour and seasonings. If you have a standing mixer, it will do all the work for you. If you don’t have one, you can knead the dough by hand. We will let the dough rise for at least 2 hours but if you have time 3 or 4 develops more flavor.

CRUST-

The key to achieving a great crust is using a pizza stone. You can get them anywhere. Most large grocery stores even stock them. Set the oven temp to 500°F and heat the stone for 1 hour before baking the pizza. This will give the perfect chewy and crunchy crust! You can always use a cast iron pan or a baking sheet but remember to preheat them.

SAUCE-

Now this part is very important. I LOVE zesty pizza sauce, and this is my go-to. It is done in no time, and you can store it for up to 4 weeks. Here is the link – Zesty Pizza Sauce

As far as toppings go, you can add whatever you desire, play around, experiment and see what you like. There are so many great sauces you can squeeze on after too. Hot honey, balsamic glaze, and hot sauce! Endless possibilities.

  • First lets prepare the starter. If using a standing mixer add the ingredients in there, if not use a large mixing bowl.
To the bowl add 7oz of warm water (110℉) 1 tsp sugar and the yeast. Stir and set a timer for 10 minutes.
  • Combine the flour, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder in bowl, and stir.
  • If you are using a Kitchen Aid mixer, pour the flour mixture and olive oil in with the starter. Using the dough hook attachment, mix on medium for 3 minutes. You shoul get a smooth ball.
  • If you are making by hand. Stir the flour mix and oil in a large bowl. Stir using wooden spoon or hands.
Flour your working surface and turn the dough out and knead for 5 minutes or until you get a smooth ball.
  • Now place the dough ball in large bowl. Drizzle with olive oil so it wont dry out.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise for at least 2 hours, but 3 or 4 is even better.
  • TIP- if you want the dough to rise quickly or it is cold, warm 1 cup of water in the microwave for 5 minutes. Remove the water (carefully) Now put the dough in the microwave. It will stay warm and give a fantastic rise.
  • After the dough has proofed split the dough in 2 even balls. Flour a work space and place the dough on top. Gently cover with plastic wrap.
Let them sit for 10-20 minutes.
  • *If you are storing one of the balls for later now is the time to wrap it in plastic wrap or use a food saver. Label in put in the freezer. It will keep for 2 months. When you are ready to use put it in the fridge to thaw for 1 day before.
  • To make the pizza-
Flour a work surface. Press the dough into a circle and flatten out. It doesn't have to be perfect but keep working it into the shape of a crust.
  • Sprinkle a pizza peel generously with cornmeal.
Now put the dough on the peel.
Brush the dough with olive oil and chopped garlic or garic butter. Spread on pizza sauce. Top with your favorite toppings.
  • Carefully slide the pizza onto the pizza stone. Bake for 8 minutes or until the dough is golden and the cheese is bubbly. Use the pizza peel to remove from the pizza stone.
Cut. Top with shredded parmesan cheese.
  • ENJOY!
