A Classic French Toast with a cake like texture that is SO delicious!
This dish is made by soaking slices of bread in a mixture of eggs and milk then frying until golden brown. I love to add flour to give that cake like texture you get in fancy brunch spots! We also add a smidge of sugar and lots of cinnamon for flavor. One of my favorite things to do is use flavored bread like my Blueberry-Lemon Sourdough. It adds such a unique flavor and great for special occasions. You can find my recipe here (must have an established sourdough starter recipe) Lemon-Blueberry Sourdough Bread
A little History-
The earliest known reference to a dish similar to French toast dates back to the 1st century in the Roman Empire. Then Latin America, Medieval Europe, and Germany by the 14th century. The name “French toast” was first used in America in the 17th century when early settlers from England brought the recipe with them. It became widely known as “French Toast” in the 18th century by an American innkeeper. In France the dish is called “pain perdu” which means lost bread in French. Whatever you call it- it is a wonderful breakfast food that is here to stay.
Okay, let’s get started!
Ingredients
- 4 large eggs
- 2/3 cup of milk
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 8 slices of thick bread (e.g., sourdough, brioche or challah)
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- Maple syrup, for serving
- Fresh berries or powdered sugar, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Batter
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, flour, sugar, ground cinnamon, a pinch of salt, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Step 2: Dip the Bread
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for a few seconds on each side. Soaking is key to achieving the best French toast.
Step 3: Cook the French Toast
Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet or griddle. Cook for 3-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crisp. Repeat with the remaining bread slices, adding more butter to the skillet as necessary.
Step 4: Serve and Enjoy
Plate the French toast (slice before plating if desired) and drizzle with maple syrup. Garnish with fresh berries or a dusting of powdered sugar, if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy your delectable breakfast treat!
Storage Tips
Store any leftover French toast in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in a toaster or oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through. Enjoy your scrumptious French toast!
