Cacio e Pepe Gnocchi Pot Pies

If classic cacio e pepe and a cozy chicken pot pie had a wildly delicious Italian-inspired love child, this would be it.

These Cacio e Pepe Gnocchi Pot Pies take everything we love about the iconic Roman pasta dish and transform it into the ultimate comfort food casserole. The result? Crispy tops, bubbling cheesy filling, and spoonfuls of rich, peppery goodness that feel fancy enough for guests but easy enough for a weeknight dinner.

Best of all, these are made in individual ramekins, which means everyone gets their own perfectly portioned pot pie with those irresistible golden edges.

The Secret to the Flavor

For this recipe, I used seasonings from Golden Steer Steak Company, and they truly take these pot pies to the next level. The Pepper Mafia Blend delivers the bold, peppery kick that’s essential to a great cacio e pepe, while the Showgirl Salt Blend adds incredible depth of flavor. These iconic seasonings are crafted with the same attention to quality and flavor that made the legendary Las Vegas steakhouse famous. If you’re looking to elevate your home cooking, I highly recommend giving them a try.

  • 1½ cups finely grated Pecorino Romano cheese

  • 1 generous pinch Showgirl salt blend (or sea salt)

For the Parmesan Biscuit Topping

For the Garlic Herb Butter Finish

  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning

How to Make Cacio e Pepe Gnocchi Pot Pies

Step 1: Cook the Gnocchi

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the gnocchi until they float to the surface, about 2 to 3 minutes.

***Before draining, reserve at least 1 cup of the cooking water. This starchy liquid is the secret to creating the silky cacio e pepe sauce.

Step 2: Build the Pepper Flavor

In a dry skillet, toast the Pepper Mafia blend until fragrant. Toasting awakens the oils in the pepper and creates a deeper, more complex flavor.

Transfer the toasted pepper to a mortar and pestle, add the salt blend, and grind everything together. If you don’t have a mortar and pestle, place the mixture in a zip-top bag and crush it with a rolling pin or heavy pan.

Step 3: Make the Creamy Cacio e Pepe Sauce

Place the Pecorino Romano and reserved gnocchi water in a skillet over low heat.

Whisk continuously until the cheese begins melting into a smooth sauce. Add the heavy cream and continue whisking until silky and creamy.

Stir in about 3/4 the toasted pepper mixture.

The sauce should be loose, glossy, and packed with peppery flavor.

Step 4: Coat the Gnocchi

Add the cooked gnocchi directly to the sauce and gently stir for 2 to 3 minutes until every piece is coated.

Divide the mixture evenly among four ramekins.

Step 5: Make the Parmesan Biscuit Topping

In a small bowl, combine the Bisquick and Parmesan cheese.

Add the milk and melted butter, then stir just until combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Spoon the biscuit mixture over each ramekin.

I like to sprinkle a bit more of the reserved pepper blend on top.

Step 6: Bake

Bake at 425°F for 18 to 20 minutes.

The biscuit topping should be golden brown and the filling should be bubbling around the edges.

Step 7: Finish with Garlic Herb Butter

Mix the melted butter and Italian seasoning together.

As soon as the ramekins come out of the oven, brush the warm biscuit tops generously with the herb butter.

Allow the pot pies to rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Tips for Success

  • Always grate your own Pecorino Romano for the smoothest sauce.
  • Keep the heat low when making the cheese sauce to prevent clumping.
  • Don’t skip toasting the pepper. It adds incredible depth.
  • Place the ramekins on a sheet pan before baking to catch any bubbling overflow.
  • Let the pot pies rest before serving so the filling can set slightly.

What to Serve with Cacio e Pepe Gnocchi Pot Pies

These rich little pot pies pair beautifully with:

  • A simple arugula salad with lemon vinaigrette
  • Roasted asparagus
  • Garlic green beans
  • Caesar salad
  • A crisp Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc
