This recipe has so many delicious components that creates such a fantastic and juicy burger.
With whiskey mixed into the beef mixture you get a very plump flavorful burger. A nice rub of spices and a brush of BBQ then topped with crunchy onion straws that have bit of a spicy bite! I like to make them with white cheddar, or pepper jack cheese steamed on, so you get that great steakhouse melt. Then stack with vegetables, a bit more BBQ sauce, and of course a buttered and toasted bun. You are going to LOVE this gourmet burger!
I have a great BBQ sauce i love to use. It goes so well on burgers. Here is the recipe. Whiskey BBQ Sauce!
I also have my own rub that adds the perfect punch of flavor to this burger. You can find that recipe here. The ultimate rub
Let’s get started!
Whiskey Burger with Fried Onion Straws!
Juicy burger with crunchy onion straws, bbq sauce, and the perfect steakhouse melted cheese
Servings: 4 servings
Ingredients
Burgers
- 1 lb grass fed ground beef
- 2 tbsp whiskey
- 1 cup bbq sauce
- 4 slices white cheddar, pepper jack, or whatever you fancy!
- 2 tsp spice rub or salt and pepper alone ( view my recipe above )
- 4 pieces Lettuce
- 1-2 tomatoes sliced into 8 optional
- 4 sandwich pickle spears optional
- 4 Hamburger buns
- 4 tsp butter, melted for the buns
- mayo optional
Onion Straws
- 1 medium white or yellow onion, sliced into small strips
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp corn starch
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 egg
- 1 cup butter milk
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp thyme
- 1/4 tsp oregano
- 1/8 tsp ground cumin
- canola or vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
Onion Straws
- Beat the egg and milk in a shallow bowl
- In another shallow bowl combine the flour, starch, and all of the spices.
- Dip the onion slices into the milk mixture and then into the flour. Dust off and repeat so you are double dipping.
- Get a fryer or pan filled with enough oil to float the onions. Carefully bring the oil temp up to 350°
- Add the straws in small batches and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until a beautiful golden brown.
- Remove onto a baking rack with paper towels underneath to let them cool without becoming soggy.
- Now try not to eat them all before the burgers are ready!
Whiskey Burgers
- In a mixing bowl, add the ground beef and whiskey. Mix together.
- Form the meat into four balls and then smash down into desired thickness of patty.
- Rub on 1/2 tsp of my special rub or simply salt and pepper the patties.
- Heat a large cast iron skillet. Med-high heat.
- Once the pan is hot, add the patties. Let them cook halfway through on onside before flipping. 3-5 minutes
- After you have flipped, brush on a good helping of bbq sauce
- Cook a few minutes more depending on the preferred doneness of your burger. You can always make small cut in the one side to the middle to check the pink.
- Now we are going to steam the cheese!
- Place the cheese slices onto the burgers. Pour in 1 tablespoon of water and cover the patties immediately with a pan lid. Let them steam for 1 minute or until the cheese is ooey gooey and perfect. Do not leave the lid on too long or you will risk the cheese melting right off.
- Remove from the pan and set aside.
- Brush the butter evenly on all of the buns. Toss them in the hot pan or in a toaster until they are golden brown.
- Now lets assemble!
- Spread mayo on the bottom bun. Now add the lettuce (this helps catch all the juices and keep the bottom bun from getting soggy) Next, we add the cheeseburger patty.
- Next layer is a good squirt of bbq sauce followed by 2 slices of tomato on each burger. A heaping handful of onion straws and topped with a butter bun! MMMM is your mouth watering yet? I like to put the pickle slice on top but by all means fit it in the bun stack if you wish.
- Now you can finally eat this insanely delicious gourmet burger.
- ENJOY!
