Air Fryer Sides

PERFECT Crispy Air-fryer French Fries!

I’ve done it! I mastered the air fryer… ok maybe not completely but I sure did master the perfect french fries!

Look at this plate of crispy, crunchy love.

In order to get a crispy fry with a chewy center we will be soaking the fries in cold water with 1 tsp of sugar. This helps to break down the starch and gives us the crisp, while the sugar will stop the oil absorption. Since we are only adding a very small amount of oil anyway with the air fryer this really gets you that perfect fry!

No sogginess after resting and no disgusting greasy mess. I mean does it get any better?! If you don’t already have a air fryer, this recipe alone should sway you. I have a  Ninja Foodi 6-in-1 2-Basket Air Fryer but there are so many options out there to choose from.

This recipe is amazing on its own with a sprinkle of your favorite salt, but if you want to add some fun toppings these fries will hold up to the challenge. I think some super cheesy chili fries are in my future mmmm.

Ok let’s get started!

Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 4-5 Med-large Russet potatoes, peeled and cut into fries
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp sea or pink Himalayan salt
  • 1 tsp sugar

Instructions

  • Before we get to cooking we need to prep the fries. After you have peeled, cut the potatoes into fries. Try to get them the same size or similar, this will give a even cooking time.
  • Fill a large bowl with cold water. Add the sugar and stir. Put the potatoes in the water and let them soak for 20 minutes. The cold water breaks down the starch and the sugar stops the oil from absorbing into the potato. This gives us the crispy exterior and soft center.
  • After 20 minutes drain the water and lay out the potatoes on paper towels. I like to lay them on a baking sheet so there is plenty of room. Let them dry for 10 minutes.
  • Before you put them in, remove the paper towel from the cooking sheet and drizzle on about a tablespoon or so on the fries and toss to coat.
  • Now lets pop em in the air fryer. Mine has deep baskets so I can cook them all at once. If you need to do them in batches it won't hurt them to sit out and dry longer in between batches.
  • Air fry on 400° for 25 minutes. If you are doing in batches check them at 15 minutes and toss or turn over. They will be done when they are golden brown and have that perfect french fry crunch,
  • Move to the serving dish and lets hydrate them with a toss of a tablespoon of oil. Mix and sprinkle on however much salt you desire..
  • ENJOY!
