Cooking Up Connections: My Weekend at the Portland Spring Home and Garden Show

Buffalo Chicken Wontons, Lemon Mousse Cake Bites, and Lessons Learned

If you’d told me a few months ago I’d be serving up sizzling buffalo chicken wontons and zesty lemon mousse cake bites to crowds at the Portland Spring Home and Garden Show, I might’ve laughed—then said, “Count me in!” This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to bring my culinary passion to life on stage, sharing delicious bites and memories with fellow food lovers. The anticipation leading up to the event was electrifying, and I couldn’t wait to see what the show had in store.

The Portland Spring Home and Garden Show buzzed with excitement from the moment doors opened. Families and friends wandered through vibrant displays of blooming flowers, innovative home gadgets, and, of course, the cooking demo stage where I had the privilege to showcase my creations. The atmosphere was welcoming and lively, making it easy to connect with guests eager for a taste of something new.

Each day, I prepared for two sessions—one at 11am and another at 1pm—where I served up 100 samples per session. The highlight? Buffalo chicken wontons, crispy and bold, alongside sweet, tangy lemon mousse cake bites. Seeing the crowd’s reactions as they tried the samples was pure joy; nothing beats the feeling of sharing your food and watching smiles spread.

Of course, stepping onto the stage with a microphone clipped to my apron was intimidating at first. Hearing my own voice echoing throughout the room felt surreal—and, honestly, a little nerve-wracking. But as the demos went on, I found my rhythm. The microphone quickly became just another tool in my culinary arsenal, helping me connect with the audience and share tips in real time. The live aspect added energy and spontaneity to each session, making every demo unique.

This year, I had the chance to try out some fantastic new appliances thanks to Standard TV and Appliance. The induction oven made precise temperature control a breeze, and the GE profile mixer handled the lemon mousse with ease. Using these modern tools was a learning experience and really elevated my cooking process—plus, it was fun to show off what they could do to the crowd.

Behind the scenes, I couldn’t have done it without Brenda, the stage manager. Her calm presence and organizational skills made everything run smoothly. Whether it was helping serve the samples or guiding me through the schedule, Brenda’s support was invaluable and made the experience feel collaborative and comfortable.

Looking back, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to cook, share, and learn. The challenges—like conquering my microphone jitters—became stepping stones to personal growth. I’m thankful to everyone at the event, from attendees to staff, for making it so memorable. I hope to continue to challenge myself with new adventures and  feel ready to whip up even more tasty creations and connect with more people.

Stay tuned—recipes for the buffalo chicken wontons and lemon mousse cake bites will be coming soon! If you were at the show, thanks for stopping by. If you missed it, I hope these stories (and soon, these recipes) inspire you in your own kitchen adventures.
